Lapage Primary School located in Bradford, is part of Northern Star Academies Trust. Northern Star Academies Trust is a thriving Multi-Academy Trust in the North of England, comprising of 15 schools. It is a charitable Trust focusing on the public advancement of education for the public benefit.

The new Lapage School building was completed in 2026, providing new educational spaces that are light, welcoming and built with sustainability in mind.

Saint-Gobain Glass has worked with System 3 to install a thermally insulating, glazing solution in the building’s facade that provides energy efficiency1 and a light, comfortable interior environment2.

The exterior glazing throughout the school features ORAE® lower-carbon flat glass3, coated with PLANITHERM® ONE T, a higher performance4, low emissivity coating (Low-E) that can help to keep interior spaces warm in cold weather due to its low U-Value, and cool in warm weather due to its high g-Value which reduces the risk of solar heat gain5.

Combining lower-carbon glass (ORAE®) with energy efficient Low-E coatings (PLANITHERM®) in glazing, helps to reduce the levels of embodied carbon and operational carbon in a building, when compared with standard, uncoated flat glass (PLANICLEAR®).

1. Energy efficient glazing features Low-Emissivity (Low-E) coatings that can help stop heat escaping, so less energy is required to heat a building.

2. PLANITHERM® ONE T has a high light transmission (TL 66%) and provides thermal insulation (U-value 1.0 W/m2K), based on a 6-16 (Ar)-6 sealed unit configuration. Visit Calumen.com for product performances.

3. ORAE® lower-carbon flat glass achieves a low carbon footprint of 6.64 kg of CO2 eq./m2 for a 4mm glass. Visit environdec.com to view the EPD.

4. Higher performance, coated, flat glass, achieves an emissivity level of 3% or less. Saint-Gobain Glass’ PLANITHERM® and COOL-LITE® products are higher performing than uncoated, flat glass substrates, based on emissivity level.

5. PLANITHERM® ONE T has a high g-Value of 0.44, based on a 6-16 (Ar)-6 sealed unit configuration, helping to reduce solar heat gain. Visit Calumen.com for product performances.

6. PLANICLEAR® is Saint-Gobain Glass’ standard flat glass substrate.

"We're proud to have recently completed our glazing works at Lapage Primary School in Bradford, using the innovative ORAE® lower-carbon glass from Saint-Gobain Glass. By specifying sustainable materials like ORAE®, we're supporting our clients in meeting their environmental objectives while continuing to deliver high-quality glazing solutions for the education sector. We're delighted to have been part of this project and to contribute to creating a more sustainable future for school buildings"
