Glass Forever – JCoffey: Fresh Wharf

The JCoffey deconstruction teams always breakdown the components of a building, segregating the waste to ensure 100% is diverted away from landfill and recycled when possible.
Fresh Wharf, located on the Thames, London, is an 11-storey building that is being retrofitted to designs by Buckley Gray Yeoman. JCoffey is deconstructing and making structural alterations to the building, on behalf of Mace.
Chris Wellgreen, Sustainability, carbon and systems manager at JCoffey Construction said: “Partnering with Saint-Gobain Glass has enabled a more specific approach to the recycling of end-of-life glass into new, high-performance flat glass that can help to create more sustainable buildings.
“JCoffey has helped setup and refine the Glass Forever, flat glass recycling programme. A lot of time and effort goes into planning the extraction of the glass, working with project stakeholders, way before any glass is removed from the building.
“We need to ensure the glass is of an appropriate quality and what segregation is required, and we need to confirm the most efficient way of breaking down the glass
“We do it because it is better for our clients and we can do it in an efficient way that doesn’t affect the programme.”
The glass has been removed and cut down into manageable sections by the JCoffey deconstruction team. It was then placed on a safe breaking table to be broken into smaller pieces that are collected in Saint-Gobain’s glass cullet bags. The JCoffey team ensures the cullet is free of contaminants before Saint-Gobain Glass collects the cullet using a euroliner, to be returned for remelting in the furnace.
JCoffey working with the design team, including BGY and Ramboll, collaborated with Saint-Gobain to ensure the exterior glazing and interior partitions were suitable for the Saint-Gobain Glass Forever programme.
