PLANICLEAR®

PLANICLEAR® – LOWER CARBON CLEAR FLOAT GLASS AS STANDARD

Saint-Gobain Glass UK & Ireland has taken a significant step forward in lower-carbon flat glass production. At its Eggborough plant, PLANICLEAR® now achieves 7.22 kgCO₂e/m² for 4mm glass (GWP Categories A1-A3)1.

The new EPD reflects Saint-Gobain Glass UK & Ireland’s regular day-to-day production. It is not based on a trial or short-term campaign. It shows a carbon reduction of more than 34% compared with the previous EPD. This strengthens PLANICLEAR® as a practical choice for lowering embodied carbon, while maintaining the same quality, availability, and performance.

The third-party verified EPD positions PLANICLEAR® amongst the lowest embodied carbon standard float glass products manufactured in the UK. It provides reliable data for planning, ESG reporting, and procurement decisions, helping customers move with confidence and avoid the risk of greenwashing. Critically, this applies to standard PLANICLEAR®, supporting lower embodied carbon at sealed unit level with no added cost and no change to product performance.

This flat glass substrate is manufactured as standard by Saint-Gobain Glass UK & Ireland, using high volumes of recycled content (28.1%) which includes high volumes of post-consumer cullet (6.82% post-consumer cullet)2.

PLANICLEAR® can be coated with Saint-Gobain’s PLANITHERM® or COOL-LITE® coatings to provide higher performance glass, that can help improve the thermal efficiency of glazing3

  2. Recycled content as defined in ISO 14021.
  3. Higher performance, coated, flat glass, achieves an emissivity level of 3% or less. Saint-Gobain Glass’ PLANITHERM® and COOL-LITE® products are higher performing than uncoated, flat glass substrates, based on emissivity level.

LOWER CARBON
PLANICLEAR® is Saint-Gobain Glass UK & Ireland’s standard flat glass substrate, now lower-carbon as standard. The new PLANICLEAR® EPD positions it amongst the lowest embodied carbon standard float glass products manufactured in the UK, as it achieves 7.22 kgCO₂e/m² for 4mm glass which is a carbon reduction of 34% compared with the previous EPD (GWP Categories A1-A3) visit environdec.com to view EPD.

LOWER IRON
PLANICLEAR® is a lower iron flat glass substrate when compared with PLANILUX® (original clear flat glass substrate specification produced by Saint-Gobain Glass pre-2018). Reducing iron levels in flat glass can help limit discolouration, therefore improving the aesthetics.

HIGHER PERFORMANCE
Using flat glass in buildings can help bring natural daylight into interior spaces, and when combined with higher performance coatings PLANICLEAR® can help improve the energy efficiency of buildings by providing thermal insulation and solar control. Higher performance, coated, flat glass, achieves an emissivity level of 3% or less. Saint-Gobain Glass’ PLANITHERM® and COOL-LITE® products are higher performing than uncoated, flat glass substrates, based on emissivity level.

PLANICLEAR® Applications

PLANICLEAR® is available in a range of thicknesses suitable for a wide variety of applications. It can be toughened or laminated for safety benefits or silvered to produce mirrors. It is also suitable for screen printing, acid etching, decoration, sand blasting, lacquering or edgeworking etc.

PLANICLEAR® can be used in applications where clarity and neutrality are required including:

  • Windows and Doors
  • Mirrors
  • Laminated Safety Glass
  • Interior Applications
